Farewelling a London Summer

Apologies in advance this is a very self indulgent post which I'll use to remind me about the city I call home.  But if you live or love London you'll understand why its nice to take a step back and remind yourself   of its opportunities.

One of the things I love most about living in London is the summer season. The long evenings, the abundance of activities and the parties. This summer has been no different but feeling I need to encapsulate every moment to savour as I head off on the road of adventure.

I have had the great pleasure of enjoying some of London's best treats this year and here are a few highlights

Seeing the Killers and the Kaiser Chiefs in Hyde Park in constant rain with my dear friend Fancino (fast followed by cocktails in teapots and fine china cups in a Soho Arts centre)

Boys finals on Court 1 at Wimbledon with my old tennis knock about mate Nic and her other half Cameron

Watching my nephew Joshua adapt to city life so quickly and playing with squirrels in Green Park  - the love for a joyful squirrel always brightens my day

Dinners at my local for a feast for fush'n'chups Gordan Ramsay style with all of my visitors - Amy, Nic & Cam, Steph, Ants & Joshua (photo's neglected for the taste sensation due to general hunger/enthusiasm to chin wag!)

Running the British 10k with my friends - albeit a terrible race for me - but the experience of sharing with friends is always a joy or at least a pity party! PW's not acceptable for the next race folks.

Farm visits on my street - Farm Fresh eggs on your street and veggies from the allotment is really a fact one should relish learning about!

And some other non-photogenic moments with the London Electronic and Dance Festival at my beloved Victoria Park with my Gore crew & more,  30th birthdays, Pasta Parties and 1st birthday's, watching my neighbourhood be knocked down for redevelopment and hanging out with my cousin Julie and her boys on the South Bank over from Berlin for school holidays (where I am writing this post!) .

These opportunities have been amazing and I really do love London. But mostly its the people I share these moments with that make the fun. I will miss you all on my travels and will undoubtedly think of each of you as I see a sight and think "hey, So-and-so would love this" or "oooo, I bet So-and-so would hate this!"

I am just so very lucky.

My My Myanmar

I have been touched, pinched, squeezed and had my back rubbed as I was sick. Myanmar is one phenomenal place which I have so much hope for. Hope for democracy, hope for development and hope for conservation, all in a gradual process without losing its authenticity. I have felt safe, with my large amounts of cash (remember no ATM’s so budgeting became a real past time of all travellers not just the “budget” ones) and in pilgrimaging crowds, in villages and on rickety hill top roads, travelling solo or in a crowd. Not once did I fear for my personal safety or that of my belongings. I had to stop myself on the first day from being so travel weary and closed. I had to trust. I had to open up and Myanmar may well have taught me one of my greatest lessons on my Big Adventure. captive in Myanmar There were moments of democratic desire, like an aged village monk carrying a bamboo log who stopped me to ask “Do you know Aung San?” to which I replied quietly knowing it was a very c...

Hills of His Holiness

The state of Himachal Pradesh is one of mountains and rivers, winding roads and toy trains. Here are a few of the famous tourist highlights I enjoyed between 10 hour bus journeys! Shimla Famed as one of the great Raj Era Hill Stations where ladies of the Raj spent monsoon summers sheltering from the heat, I had to see this. In my experience this is anything but a shelter from the heat! On arrival you are deposited in a new bus station 8 km from the town forcing you to use either the public bus (R10) or a  taxi (R250) neither takes you to the top of town or even close to a hotel. So I opted for the R10 bus. They deposited me at the bottom of the hill. Porters were waiting at the bottom but how hard could it be? Hard. I walked for 3 hours in the hot sun with my 20+kg trying to find a nice clean hotel room, eventually ending up on the ground floor of Spars Lodge. You can’t open the windows due to monkeys so the task of finding a room in Indian summer season is hard. Really th...
